New Graduate Student Grants
UP SLIS is delighted to announce the Maureen Henninger Graduate Scholarship and Research Grants (MHGSRG). Officially revealed last 31 March 2022 in an event celebrating women leaders in LIS, the grants are each awarded to a graduate student of SLIS every academic year. Under the scholarship grant, an incoming graduate student will receive tuition up to PHP 15,000 per semester for two years, the recommended length of study. Another student will get support to present their work in an international conference under the research grant. As undergraduate students already enjoy free tuition under R.A. 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, these grants enable students to continue to graduate school and pursue research that advances the body of knowledge in LIS.
We are most grateful to Dr. Maureen Henninger for her generosity and commitment to the advancement of LIS education and research in the Philippines. Dr. Henninger is currently a visiting professor in SLIS and is actively involved in revamping our curriculum and research efforts. She has a long experience at the forefront of research and practice in the digital environment, and with the advent of the internet, has published and consulted widely on digital literacy for industry, government and non-government organizations, both in Australia and internationally. She has been an invited guest speaker at many conferences within the information, medical, biotechnology, and education professions.
As an information professional, Dr. Henninger has worked with government and international organisations to deliver digital literacy and projects for the preservation of information artefacts in many Asian and Pacific countries. In her academic career, her research, curriculum, and teaching has been in the field of digital literacy, and more recently, data literacy, particularly in the journalistic field. Her current concern is with governmental mechanisms and practices that enable and constrain democratic processes and active citizenship.
